When to Hire a Landscape Designer vs DIY and Why Landscapers are Important

Are you looking at a landscaping project in the future? Since we are spending more time at home during Covid, people are looking at doing projects that are sustainable and productive that they can do on their own. So, how do you know when it is time to hire a landscape designer and landscaper or complete a DIY project?

  • Planting annuals to fill in your perennial garden so that you always have something in bloom – especially August blooms.
  • Window Boxes and Container Gardening
  • Vegetable Gardens
  • Edging your garden for a nice crisp line between lawn and garden
  • Mulching your garden to avoid weeds and allow for the garden to hold moisture longer

  • When you have done a large scope of construction and most of your landscaping is gone or no longer makes sense with the addition.
  • When your new construction home is complete, and you have a naked house.
  • When you want to create a significant change to your yard layouts such as patio or water feature.

  • When creating a drip edge around your house with gravel or river rock. Note: This should be as deep as your overhang plus 6”
  • When planting large trees so that the hole is deep enough and the landscaper will ensure the tree for a year.
  • When introducing large rocks for a landscaping feature
  • When creating a patio with planting beds.

Some landscape companies offer the design process as well as construction such as Hales Landscaping and Jacquelyn Nooney Landscaping. They will work with you to create a beautiful design as well as the end product, just remember that this is a creative process especially when working with large stones so it’s best to let go a bit and let them design and build.

When I design a large addition or new construction home, I always plan on how the outdoors will be used with function and flow. I will design the patio, planting beds, and landscape features as they relate to windows and doors. I find it to be an integral part of the design process for a “whole home” approach. Let me know if you are interested in working with me on a project like this!
