Are you struggling to figure out your style? As you are starting a project, or even if you’re just wanting to refresh your home, it’s helpful to determine a home style so that your home feels cohesive and authentic to you.
Your priority should be to define a consistent style that you can thread throughout your house to create a more unified home. For an example of what not to do – and this is not a lie – look no further than my mother-in-law’s house: she had a Cowboy-themed Family Room, Chinoiserie-inspired Dining Room, White-themed Living Room, Purple and Black Powder Room, and so on. It was very jarring to move from space to space not knowing what to expect.
Below are just a few search terms for you to use when googling around for inspiration. At Amy Dutton Home, we often embue our projects with these styles.
- Traditional
- Transitional
- Shabby Chic
- Farmhouse
- Eclectic
Pinterest is also an amazing resource! I ask all my clients create one board with several sub-boards for pinning any images that inspire certain room styles. For example, they will pin exteriors, kitchens, bathrooms, styling, etc. Pinterest also has a great algorithm so that when you pin something, other similar images will populate in your feed. Yes, you can get lost in it and develop a slight addiction, but it’s also very inspirational. If interested, you can follow me on Pinterest as well! At the top of my saved boards are ADH-created projects, then I’ve featured inspiration boards for my followers towards the bottom of my profile.
Determining your style assures you a space that you will absolutely love and feel comfortable in at the end of your project. And remember…have fun!
