The Power of Sketching: How Preliminary Designs Shape Our Client Projects

Designing a home is exciting, and sketching plays a pivotal role in shaping a project’s success! From the very first lines drawn on paper to the detailed 2D and 3D renderings we create in CAD, every step in the design process is crucial. Let’s explore how these preliminary designs can set the stage for a beautiful final result.

What are the Benefits of Preliminary Designs?

Preliminary designs enhance projects in several ways. First, they bridge the gap between initial ideas and reality, and ensure that we are on the same page with our client’s vision. They also allow clients to visualize the impact of architectural design changes, which leads to more confident decision making regarding materials, layouts, and finishes.

Through preliminary designs, we can also identify potential issues early in the design phase, which can save time and money down the road and minimize costly changes during the construction phase.

The Art of Sketching

During our initial meeting with our clients, we like to gather inspiration and discuss the overall vision they have for their home. We then take measurements–either on-site or using provided dimensions–to create preliminary designs. Next, we sketch.

Sketching is an important part of our design process because it allows us to quickly communicate fundamental ideas and design concepts with our clients. Unlike polished renderings, sketches are free and flexible, and allow us to explore various layouts and styles without getting bogged down by the details. This process helps clients understand the general vision before revisiting the sketches for refinement until we land on something that works.

From Sketches to 3D Renderings

After developing ideas through our preliminary sketches, we then transition to CAD to create 3D models. CAD allows us to bring our sketches to life and manipulate elements like lighting, counter depth, materials, appliances, and plumbing and electrical layouts with ease.

For instance, if a client wants their exterior siding changed from blue to white, we are easily able to paint it with a few simple clicks. This flexibility means that clients can see their design come to life in real-time, which makes it easier for them to make well-informed design decisions. In this phase, we also dial in on the floor plan layouts and apply selected materials to the renderings based on their inspiration.

Sharing Renderings with Our Clients

Presenting renderings to our clients is always exciting! Throughout the design phase, we share both 2D and 3D renderings with our clients and typically invite them to our design studio for a big screen review, where we can make real-time adjustments. Though, virtual meetings via Zoom are also an option.

These visual representations help them understand how their home will feel and function. For example, a 3D rendering of an open-concept kitchen allows clients to envision how their family will interact within the space and assess the function and flow. During this time, they can decide if they want to change any appliances around or make their kitchen island smaller or larger, if space permits.

So whether you’re dreaming of a custom home or exploring Abrigo Home’s online home plans, preliminary sketches help guide our clients from initial design concepts to completion with clarity and confidence.
