Are you looking for some beautiful plants, shrubs, and trees that work well together? I thought I would share with you my favorite plant list.
FOUNDATION PLANTINGS
It’s important to have plantings against your home to buffer between the ground and structure. There should be a drip edge of gravel or river rock that is the depth of the roof overhang plus six inches. Then in a mulched bed, the following plants work beautifully.
- Peonies
- Cranesbill Geranium
- Ostrich Fern
- Hosta
- Hydrangea Tree
- Sedum, Autumn Joy
- Flowering Dogwood
- Peony Tree
- Miscanthus Grass
- Pennisetum Grass
- Bayberry
POTTED PLANTS:
When considering potted plants, consider the heights of the pots in order to create a space that has movement and interest. Large potted plants can even create a separation of spaces. I use the large varying height of potted plants at the end of my driveway in the summer only to extend my patio then remove them in the winter so that we can park closer to the back door.
- Euphorbia x martini ‘Ascot Rainbow’ (Spurge)
- Coleus ‘Solar Furnace’
- Salvia farinacea ‘Victoria Blue’
- Canna Tender Perennial
- Brugmansia Aurea ‘Charles Grimaldi’ (Angel’s Trumpet)
- Cardinal Vine (Morning Glory); Euphorbia Hybrida Breathless Blush
- Ricinus communis ‘Bright Red Carmencita’ (Castor Bean)
- Euphorbia Hybrid
- Geranium
- Begonia ‘Dragon Wing Pink’
- Egyptian Papyrus
For potted plants, I only use annuals (plants that die after one season) because they will continue blooming all summer long and are less expensive. And for foundation plantings, I only use perennials (plants that come back every year) so that they can continue growing and fill in throughout the years. Most importantly, enjoy the process.
