I have walls! As expected, the drywall week was a long one, but we survived and have moved forward! Now, there are two surfaces that did not get drywalled – the Master Bedroom wall and ceiling. Since the room is so small, I decided to play with materials to make the space a bit more interesting.
Old House Parts in Kennebunk, Maine is a wonderful resource for reclaimed architectural products. A few months back they announced in their newsletter that they had pulled colored wood from the old Bishop’s house that they were tearing down in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. So I went up to Old House Parts and selected the wood that we thought would work. Then over the next few weeks, Mike and the owner Tom communicated with me about what exactly they had pulled for colors and sizes, the square footage and different options with photos. The idea was that we wanted it to be installed randomly in a casual pattern.
Old House Parts delivered the wood and the finish carpenters installed it. I gave them guidance and communicated the design and trusted that they would become artists for a day. While they chuckled about how much of this kind of wood they have thrown out, I was proud that they discovered the artist within the contractor.
The result if fun, inspiring and warm. I love having historic pieces in my home that tell a story in a different way. Let me know if I can help you create a wall like this for your home!
