Stout Heart is a marketing company located in Portsmouth, NH and Amy Dutton Home is lucky enough to have them design our website and other marketing materials. We are also lucky enough to have been able to design the renovation of the principal’s home. “New Englander Meets Modern” is a home that had an existing small footprint that desperately needed to be renovated and a detached garage with a two-season room off the back that was not functional for the space.
The project scope included accommodating a growing and very active family living in a small home. Structurally, we were connecting the existing house and garage with a new addition off the back to replace the two-season room with a connector. The project incorporates a new mudroom, family room, kitchen, living area, dining room (with built-in vinyl record wall), hallway with storage, powder room | laundry, kid’s bath, and master suite.
The existing home is a traditional New Englander but the design aesthetic focus was simple and modern. The goal was to blend the house and addition to the garage from the front as graceful as possible, but the back and interior would be modern from the moment you open the door.
The cabinetry is white modern flat panel mixed with walnut wood and custom designed hardware. This cabinetry defines the modern aesthetic of the space with a structural walnut record wall, walnut island and walnut and white cabinetry with bench in the mudroom. The kitchen and the first | second floor hallways floor to ceiling storage are white and incredibly functional.
The exterior façade does not blend but rather creates a stark contrast. My clients wanted the back of the house to be modern and black so we used Boral nickel-gap 4” at the bottom and 10” nickel-gap at the gable top while keeping the rest of the house tan and traditional. We selected Benjamin Moore, Raccoon Fur as the black exterior color and it is beautiful with the black Marvin, Integrity windows and doors. The 9’ slider from the kitchen | family room and the 6’ slider from the mudroom lead out to the backyard that will become eventual patio, gardens and grass.
The result is amazing! I love the dimensional cabinetry juxtaposing white and walnut with large format tile floor as well as polished concrete floor to work beautifully with white walls and black window casing as much as I love the black exterior juxtaposed with the tan clapboards. Honestly, this was one of my favorite projects and it was fun and inspiring working with the owner of Stout Heart.
