A Modern Backsplash Completes the Kitchen
How does a modern backsplash complete the kitchen? Honestly, it’s wasn’t all that easy but the reward is amazing!
Yes, this backsplash was a journey! Let me set the stage:
- Materials: both off-white colored cabinetry and rift-sawn white oak with a white wash cabinetry as well as grey concrete countertops. White Walls and Walnut Flooring top it off.
- Because of these multi-layered materials, the backsplash became not only important but quite difficult to define.
Originally, I steered my client toward an 18” x 36” grained patterned porcelain tile. The problem was two-fold? Grout lines and which direction to run the grain. So, we abandoned that idea and my client came up with the idea to consider a solid surface – and it was a great idea. The right idea!
Star Island Builders directed us toward Merrimack Stone in Merrimack, NH as a supplier. The client went down to Boston Granite Exchange to examine and approve the stone, they templated a few days later and shortly after that, the new backsplash was installed.
The stone is a ¾” thick – typical for backsplashes vs the 1-1/4” thick stone used on countertops – Cambria. Cambria is a manufactured quartzite stone which means that each slab is relatively the same and extremely strong and predictable. While the install was tricky because the walls were (as typical) not straight, but the guys did a great job.
The result… clean, modern and interesting with movement and life.
