House Colors

Choosing  the right color to paint your house can be almost overwhelming. After all, it’s a big and expensive decision – one that will last a long time.

This home is in Grenada and it actually looks quite beautiful in it’s setting. But in many parts of the world, it would be over the top. Why? Because all the colors (including the car) are competing with each other instead of complimenting. Here are some quick tips on choosing your paint colors:

  1. Take a good amount of time driving around and looking at houses that you like the color scheme and make a consistent catalog of these choices.
  2. Ask homeowners what color their house is painted, 9 out 10 homeowners know the exact color of their house because it was a big decision for them as well.
  3. Paint large 36″ x 36″ patches on your house of the potential color choices and live with them for awhile. I would advise not asking for a lot of opinions, you might not necessarily listen to your neighbors.
  4. Choose a trim color that takes your window trim into account by either matching or blending gracefully.
  5. Consider the scale of your house AND how much roof is visible. For example, if you have a tall victorian with very little roof that is seen, consider going darker in hue in order to “hold the house down”. If you have a bungalow with a lot of roof, you can go lighter or mid-hue since there is already “weight to the house”.

Usually, I encourage people to go with what their gut, but since this is such a big investment  I encourage you to either get professional advise.  Either send me a photo or post it on houzz.com in the discussion section for great advise.
