These Portsmouth, New Hampshire, homeowners purchased their house in the Little Harbor Neighborhood knowing that it needed a lot of love. Since it was in a state of disrepair, they dove into the renovations themselves before calling us in to do the more extensive renovations and additions. Adding a 26’x26′ living space to both the first and second floor required working with the city to receive a lot coverage variance. Accommodating their transitional style, our goal was to create a space that is casual and functional for daily family life (including their many animals) while still being open and welcoming for their many guests. Our work involved creating a mudroom, kitchen, walk-in pantry, laundry room, powder room, and family room on the first floor, and on the second floor we renovated the kid’s bathroom and added a master bedroom suite complete with a full bath, office, and walk-in closet. It was fun to work with homeowners who were handy themselves and enjoyed design projects, like using old wood to make the pantry barn door, and incorporating a reclaimed lighting fixture from Germany. We complemented these unique elements with inset Shaker style cabinetry, White Dove paint from Benjamin Moore, soapstone countertops, and Jacobean pre-finished oak flooring.
