We were called to this modern farmhouse in Rye, New Hampshire, for a very specific task: to renovate the space over the existing garage into a master bedroom suite for the homeowners. The end result is an intimate bedroom oasis with a seating area, desk and office space, two walk-in closets, and a spacious connected bathroom. The project was not without its challenges; in order to create this space, we needed to finish the floor heights of the attic over the garage considering the relationship between those and the existing second floors. It was necessary to add key dormers in order to accomplish appropriate head height in the bedroom, then build out the entire space very economically to fit all the elements in. We got creative by playing with the lines of the roof to create visual interest, and also to maximize space. To add character and texture to the room, we used rough sawn barn board for trim and wide pine boards for our flooring. Kohler fixtures, Andersen 400 Series windows, and lighting and cabinetry from Restoration Hardware, and hardwood finishes from Selectwood of Portsmouth completed the rustic but modern feel.
