What’s “IN” in the Kitchen?

I always advise my clients to spend time of Houzz and Pinterest to create inspiration boards of things that they like. If you are consistent in  a theme, then this is a detail that you should incorporate in your home. I did this myself when designing our kitchen renovation and found that I love the idea of the white subway tiled wall and dark, thick floating shelves. Yes, it’s “IN” so I had to check myself to make sure it’s not too trendy.

Make sure that you really, really love the idea and that it works in your home functionally instead of getting swept up in the trending style of the day. Trends usually date quickly and you will be left with something that was expensive and puts your home as risk of low return on investment.

For example, I really do not like black cabinets. I see them in several photos and even sold online at William Sonoma etc. Black shows dirt and watermarks and brings a heavy weight to the room. Also trending are very, very uncomfortable chairs. While they are stylish and fairly inexpensive, trust me – don’t buy them, especially online.

Let me know if you have questions about what’s IN and what’s too trendy!
